Dr Jon Mason

Design Director, Philips | Visiting Professor of Healthcare Design Ergonomics | Chartered Ergonomist and Human Factors Specialist

Dr Jon Mason leads the Design Review team at Philips, an internal design consultancy raising design quality across healthcare and consumer solutions. With over 20 years' experience spanning front-end innovation, user research, physical ergonomics for medical devices, and design leadership of expert teams.

Early in his career at Philips Research, Jon led user research into connected technologies across Europe and the USA, contributing to 70+ patents (22 as primary inventor) and playing a formative role in Philips Hue, a smart home system that now generates approximately €1 billion in annual revenue.

Since transitioning to healthcare in 2018, Jon has established himself as a recognized authority on systems thinking and inclusive design in regulated environments, and established Philips' guidance on physical ergonomics for medical device design. He introduced digital human modelling, task analysis, postural assessment, and systems modelling to design teams across Ultrasound, DXR, CT, IGT, and MR business units. He developed the Total Team approach to design leadership that draws upon human factors principles and people centricity.

Jon holds a PhD in design creativity and methodology, two degrees in industrial design, and a Master's in Human Factors and Ergonomics, and is a visiting Professor at Loughborough University Design School where he contributes to MSc teaching on human factors in medical device design. He is a Chartered Ergonomist and serves as mentor and assessor for the UK Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors.
